Sentiment Revived

I LOVE LOVE LOVE working on pieces like this.  The client had inherited this cool phone table from her grandmother.  She just purchased a new home and wanted it to be refinished.  There is an obvious sentimental element to the table, but it needed to be updated to fit her lifestyle.

We started by selecting the fabric.  The client went with this fantastic floral pattern with a great color palette.

The plan was to pull a color from the fabric to paint the body of the piece while stripping and refinishing the top in a dark stain.  She selected Benjamin Moore’s Dinner Party, with is a rich red with brown undertones.

I removed the seat, gave it a fresh cushion and recovered it in the new fabric.  Next, I stripped the table top.  It’s important to remove old finish before finalizing the plan because you never know what you will find underneath.  Sometimes painted pieces are just plywood.  In this case, the wood had an oak veneer. There was a sizable chunk that had been broken out and painted over, so I needed to determine how best to address that.
I was able to fill the missing piece with wood filler and sand it smooth.  While it will still have a different texture than the wood, it will at least blend in with the dark stain that the client selected.

I stained the top General Finishes Java Gel and was really pleased with how the grain came out in the wood.  Since the original piece had tons of character from years of use, I asked the client if she wanted me to repair all of the chips and dings before I repainted the piece, or if she wanted me to highlight the age and character by dry brushing black over the red.  She said that she liked the more rustic look, so we decided to highlight the character.  Here is the table before dry brushing.

The black paint settles into the texture and retains its beautiful character.

Finally, I finished the top off with General Finishes High-Performance Top Coat and protected the paint with Minwax Polycrylic in Matte finish.

I am so excited to see this piece recreated to live on for generations.

Hold my wine, I’ve got this…
