New Home for a Vintage Stereo

I client recently asked me to build a cabinet to house a vintage stereo system, including two large speakers, a receiver and a CD player.  I got to work on measuring dimensions and designing their cabinet.  Since the overall dimensions would be 32″ wide, 21″ deep and 46″ high, I decided to build the sides and shelves out of maple plywood.  This decision helps to keep the cost down, but still provides a beautiful wood grain.  For the sides, I chose 1/2 inch plywood and went with 3/4 inch for the base and shelves to provide extra support.

My design has the speakers on the bottom, with the receiver and CD player on the upper two shelves.  As the equipment was narrower than the speakers, I was able to provide two built-in compartments for CDs. I trimmed out the entire face in pine 1X2s and created a skirt at the base with 1X3s.  The skirt gave a little cover for the casters I installed for easy moving.

The client wanted a dark stain, so I went with General Finishes Java Gel.   Two coats of Varathane Polyurethane in Semi-Gloss gave it the protection it will need for years to come.

I can almost see them dancing around the living room now…

Hold my wine, I’ve got this…
