Makeover of the Week

Now, this little nightstand was an amazing transformation. It was rescued from the trash by a friend who saw its pot
ential. It was discarded because the top was water damaged beyond repair. The wood was warped in such a way that it couldn’t be put back together. But that doesn’t mean it is a loss—I just needed to build a new top! So outcomes my jigsaw and router, and in no time, the potential for this handsome piece was evident. A little paint, a little stain, and a little clean-up on the hardware (in this case I refinished the original hardware) and this gem was ready to go.

I found that I really love the combination of paint and stain in a single piece. They complement each other so well and seem to bring out the best in one another. Naturally, the portion of the furniture that is stained needs to have beautiful wood that is in good condition. Sometimes staining the top is the best option because it’s flat and relatively easy to sand and refinish. In this situation, I replaced the top and therefore chose to stain it. If there’s any damage to the body of the furniture, that damage can be repaired and painted over. The key is to determine the most salvageable parts of the furniture, highlight those, and repair the rest.

Apparently, I’m not alone in my love for the paint/stain combo, because this little nightstand was snapped up as soon as it arrived at the shop.

Hold my wine, I’ve got this…
