The Little Things

Sometimes it’s the little things that make a room. That one small detail that evokes a special memory.

I got so excited for this project I started painting before I took the “before” picture!

And sometimes, these details start out as something less that ideal. It happened to me when I spotted this metal art at a flea market for $6 (so cheap I didn’t even have the heart to barter with the guy!)

Let me fill you in on the backstory. Hot air balloons hold a special place in my heart. Seven years ago my husband and I booked a trip to Italy. While researching attractions (not a difficult task mind you!) I came across a hot air balloon ride. I booked it! The description could not have painted a better picture in my mind. “Hot air balloon ride over Tuscany at sunrise”. Are you kidding me? Yes, yes yes! It turns out that it was even better than I imagined. It was stunning to glide across the misty hills, vineyards, and villas as the sun broke across the horizon. The experience was the travel highlight of my life. Needless to say, hot air balloons are near and dear to me.

So back to the point. I found these metal balloons and was instantly drawn to them. The problem was they were not a good color scheme for the room I was planning. I wanted them to float dreamily about the headboard of our master bedroom—which was done in soothing tones of pale grays, blues, and greens.

I had an absolute blast picking out the new colors. (In fairness, I have been known to stand staring at all the gorgeous colors in the Sherwin Williams store window. Is that normal??) The project became a bit like a paint by numbers game—balancing the colors throughout the piece. I am absolutely in love with the final outcome.

Finished piece hanging in our master bedroom.

The lesson here? Never let details (like color) get in your way when creating your home’s style and feel. Follow your heart, use a little creativity, and make a home that feeds your soul.

Hold my wine, I’ve got this…
