Little Blank Slate

There is great satisfaction when an old piece of furniture can be saved and brought back to life. There is even greater satisfaction when a homely piece of furniture is recreated to be almost unrecognizable. There is such a high that goes with that!

Now, I understand that most of you think that such deep satisfaction is nerdy—or at the very least odd—and you are probably right. But to be able to make something from virtually nothing satisfies in a way that is almost indescribable (and yes, I am actually smiling as I type this).
Ok, I digress.

Here is a homely little 4 drawer dresser with good lines. Can you say blank slate??
I had the vision! I wanted to try out a new stain I bought called “Sunbleached”. I must admit that it was not what I expected. It went on like more of a paint than a stain and didn’t allow the grain of the wood to show through as much as I wanted. Thankfully, with woodworking, you always have your handy “eraser’ known as sandpaper. I gave it a light sanding to bring the grain back out and LOVE LOVE LOVE how it turned out. It’s a gorgeous mix of grays and light brown tones. And what complements those tones all day long? Deep navy blue of course! Navy is a trending color right now and I am so happy because I have always had a secret little crush on navy blue.

Staggered numbers on the drawers added interest and visual balance.

I sealed the entire piece with a matte polycrylic to achieve a buffed sheen and couldn’t be more pleased with the results. Even though I reused the original hardware, this dresser barely resembles its former self.

What do you think?

Hold my wine, I’ve got this…
