Upcycling

Throw back (Tuesday??)

I was scrolling back through the photographs of all the pieces I have refinished, and a couple of oldies but goodies caught my attention. The theme? REPURPOSING!! Making something entirely different out of a common item.

Let’s take a look at a few of my favorites. First up is this suitcase end table. Hard-sided suitcases of the past have largely been replaced by soft-sided luggage, so these are fairly easy to find at thrift stores and antique shops. I snagged these because the flat sides were going to be perfect for my project. (The bonus was they came in “mold green”!! I really do have to question the color pallet of the ’70s, but I digress.)

Anyway, these little lovelies came home with me and each was treated to a makeover of different but coordinating neutrals. (AHHH, they were feeling better already!). Next, I drilled holes in the tops of the largest 2 and the bottom of the smaller two and attached them all together with bolts. MAJOR BONUS? The top suitcase can serve as additional storage. The three together form the perfect height for an end table or side table.

My next repurpose project was an old bread box.

I’m not sure what ever happened to breadboxes. Were they shamed out of existence with the anti-carb craze? Let’s be honest–most of us still eat bread in one form or another. Don’t we still need a place to put it? Anway, breadboxes of all styles and materials are easy finds at thrift stores. A little modification and they become the perfect charging station for phones and other electronics. I simply drilled holes in the back to allow access for cords and repainted it as a nod to its new purpose. A great addition to any room, I think these are especially cute in the kitchen.

Take a look around your home. Are there any oldies but goodies that you can transform into something more functional for your modern life?

Hold my wine, I’ve got this…
