I absolutely love the story behind this desk. My client took over her father’s business, and he had taken it over from his father. This desk was the original desk in her grandfather’s office. You can actually feel the history and sentiment when you look at it. It was well worn from generations of use.
Obviously sentimental, but no longer practical for her office, my client asked me to redesign and repurpose this desk to serve as a sideboard in her dining room.
I trimmed the desktop down in the back to allow it to sit flush with a wall. From there I removed the bottom two drawers on either side and replaced them with open shelving. Finally, I bridged the two sides with a low shelf to accommodate large display items.
The desktop was refinished and stained to match the shelves, while the body was painted a deep gray.
New drawer pulls completed the makeover. This piece of family history lives on in the dining room and will continue to hold memories for this family.
