Walking Down Memory Lane with the Hoosier Cabinet

I was looking through pictures of my work and came across this beauty!  I wanted to highlight this piece because it is the perfect example of taking something old but amazing and making it work for you and your lifestyle.

My client was given this cabinet and it was in pretty rough condition.  Although the flour bin and sifter were in great shape, it was missing the roll-down door on the top and the decorative trim on the bottom of the base was no longer attached.  The floor of the base unit had been replaced with paneling (yes, literally wall paneling) and had absolutely no support underneath.

As always, repairs came first.  I tore out the old base floor, replaced it, and added support.  Next, I removed and cleaned up all the hardware.  I reattached the decorative trim and filled in damaged areas.

Finally it was time to paint.  It was amazing what a crisp coat of white paint could do!Hoosier Cabinet, Amy's Upcycles, upcycles, refinish, repurpose, customize, painted furniture, Pottstown, PA, TCACC

We decided that since the pull-down door was missing, we would create some interest by adding a piece of pressed tin to the backsplash.  In this case, I opted for a plastic version for both cost and ease of cutting.  When I received the tin, it was the exact pattern I was looking for, but predictably, it looked like plastic.  Using the newly-cleaned hardware as a color guide, I aged the “tin” with a metallic wax.  It took on the patina of an old piece of tin–which is appropriate for the age of the piece.

The client asked that an important family quote be included on the bottom door.  I painted the inset of each door panel a dark gray and added the quote in white. Hoosier Cabinet, Amy's Upcycles, upcycles, refinish, repurpose, customize, painted furniture, Pottstown, PA, TCACC

It was finally time to put it all back together.

The finished cabinet now serves as a coffee bar in my client’s home.  I hope she loves it as much as I do!!
