Upcycling

Is that even a word? Yep, it sure is! And my intention with this blog is for you to join me on a creative ride of upcycling to show you not only what it is and what can be done, but why you should consider adding upcycled items to your life. First, let’s define it. Upcycling is the art of taking something old (whether discarded, damaged or outdated) and creating something new, vibrant, unique and BETTER. For me, it’s the art of taking old furniture with soul and breathing new life into it.

And why would you want “old junk”??? Because it’s AWESOME. Each piece is revived to be one of a kind. Think about that. It is the only one EVER. And it can be yours. It can be customized to your specifications, color, theme, size and taste. Try asking for all THAT in a big box store!! And it’s amazing for the environment. Beautiful pieces with great bones are saved from landfills every day due to the passions of upcyclers. And since each piece so unique, everyone can join the fun! There are plenty of gems for every taste– from upscale shoppers to thrifty scouters, millennials to seniors.

This kitchen island is just one example of creative problem solving with upcycling. The client had specific needs regarding dimensions, storage, butcher block overhang and mobility of the piece. Enter the lonely, discarded dresser and a few modifications.

So is upcycling right for every situation? No, but it can provide creative and unique solutions to some of your toughest decor challenges. That’s what I want to show you through my weekly posts. What has you stumped? Kitchen too narrow for a conventional island? Replacing your kids “outgrown” bedroom furniture not in the cards financially? Can’t find a plant stand that works with that huge fern? Stick with me, and I bet we can solve it.
