Makeovers

Oops, I Did It Again…

Sorry for the Britney reference. I started refinishing again without taking a before picture!! Ugh!

Anyway, I got so excited about this dresser that I couldn’t wait to get started. I had the drawers out, hardware off and had already taken the belt sander to the top before I remembered! I think you can still get a pretty good idea of what it looked like before. Plain, orange-hued stain with a gloss finish and no contrast to add interest. I really love the corners on this dresser, however. They remind me of Roman columns.

This is a solid, well-built dresser and has many years of life left in it—it was begging to be gorgeous again! I got the top and drawer faces sanded down and stained them a warm red-brown. Then the rest of the dresser was painted black. The cheap brass hardware had to go! (sorry—those didn’t make the picture but trust me, they were awful). I replaced them with oil-rubbed bronze pulls that have copper highlights in the metal. The copper and bronze pulled both colors of the dresser together perfectly. The finished piece looks warm yet sophisticated.

It is shocking to me how many pieces of well-built furniture get tossed every day because they are worn, dated or have (sadly) outlived their owners. What a waste of craftsmanship, history, and resources. Today’s trends actually beg for mix and match pieces as opposed to furniture sets. Think how many pieces of furniture we could keep out of landfills if we just took the time to reimagine them and allow them to shine in their new roles!

Hold my wine, I’ve got this…
