Makeovers

From Feminine to Masculine

This desk came to me as an old “girl’s” desk.  Not only were the features and color feminine, but there was glitter and sparkles GALORE inside the drawers.  The front faces of the drawers had somewhat random detailing, with top one having oval trim and the bottom two having a corrugated square trim.  And yes, I forgot to take a picture BEFORE I pried off these details (I just get so excited to start!!).  But I think you can still get the idea.

The inspiration for this piece came in changing those drawer fronts.  If they had all been the same detailing, I could have worked with it, but since it was mismatched, I knew I wanted to change it out.  I thought texture might be an interesting element to add to this desk, so I decided to decoupage burlap to the drawer fronts.  I had some dark brown burlap from another project, so I went to town cutting it to size.  What I didn’t anticipate was being able to see the decoupage through the fibers in the burlap.  Hmmmm.   Well, when in doubt, paint it.  So once the decoupage medium was dry I painted it Truffle in Waverly’s chalk paint.  I then dry brushed a bit of Waverly’s Ink chalk paint over top to highlight the texture.  Finally, I built custom framing around each drawer front to create a clean edge for the burlap.

I loved the color on the drawer fronts and felt it would lend itself to a masculine color palette.  That said, there was still some pretty feminine scrolling at the bottom of the desk, so I removed some of the curves with a belt sander.  I finished painting the body of the desk in Ink and sealed it with a clear Polycrylic.  Finally, I chose some masculine hardware to complete the look.

I love how this desk turned out.  It has masculine tones but the color palette and texture make it an interesting piece in any setting.

Hold my wine, I’ve got this…
