To Paint or Not to Paint

I have to admit that this was a tough one for me to paint.  When I purchased this piece, the top was heavily scratched and split, and there was some damage on the one side, but I really really loved the finish.  My solution was to repair and refinish the top and the damage to the side, but otherwise just clean up the dresser and put it up for sale as-is.  The original makeover is pictured below.

Unfortunately, the damage to the side was not able to be camouflaged.   I finally caved and painted the body.  I went with a creamy ivory from Waverly called Cashew.  It blended well with the existing tones of the dresser, and actually enhanced the original finish by making it “pop”.  The serpentine curves of this dresser are a nod its era, but the paint and stain finish gave it an updated feel.  Since fresh paint looked too stark for a piece of its age, I gave it a light distressing and a coat of wax to seal it.  I kept the original hardware, as it was interesting and appropriate for the finished look.

I absolutely love the way this dresser turned out.  Painting beautiful wood initially goes against my instinct, but in this case, it couldn’t be helped and the results were well worth the gamble.

Hold my wine, I’ve got this…
