Pie Safe Envy

I have to admit I fell a little in love with this pie safe.  I’m a sucker for copper and this piece is gorgeous!  It was in perfect condition when the client asked me to give it an update.  The pie safe is actually going to live in the same dining room as the table and chairs makeover I did a while back.

The client wanted to pie safe to blend with the furniture I had already refinished, but they were looking for some additional distressing for character.  I started by painting the entire body of the pie safe (except for the top and obviously the copper) in the same creamy white as the table base (Benjamin Moore Sugar Cookie).  My initial plan was to dry brush Benjamin Moore’s Wenge over the base color to create the effect of distressing. However, the Wenge color on top of the creamy base ended up looking a little too “berry”, as the cream highlighted the purple undertones in the Wenge.   I then dry brushed an ashy brown color (Valspar Black Hills Shadow) over top that dialed down the purple tones and gave the finish even more dimension.

The top was stripped, sanded and refinished with Minwax Red Mahogany to match the table top.  I finished the piece off with a protective coat of Minwax Polycrylic in matte.

It was a sad day when I had to deliver the finished piece, but it looks amazing with their newly refreshed dining set.  At least I’ll always have pictures…

Hold my wine, I’ve got this…
